The MedTech Accelerator is an initiative from the UCL Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME), in partnership with the NIHR University College London Hospitals Biomedical Research Centre, which aims to meet the UK Government’s Innovation, Health & Wealth challenge by harnessing the unique power of university-based innovation and experimental medicine.
The MedTech Accelerator embodies a holistic approach to medical technology innovation. Realising that the old ‘bench to bedside’ linear model does not reflect reality, an iterative ‘innovation spiral’ model has been developed that inherently acknowledges the complexity of medtech innovation. The model helps users to keep the primary objective – delivering patient benefit – firmly in mind, while simultaneously working towards the secondary objectives of efficiency for healthcare providers, esteem for researchers, and profit for industry.
In practical terms the MedTech Accelerator is an introduction and connection service. Its staff act as navigators for those that need to negotiate the rich and complex landscape of UCL, its partner hospitals, and its internal service providers. Its staff aim to give the earliest and best possible guidance on both who to see next, and what to do next, as a project moves from an initial concept towards an end product.
